Young Wiltshire Artist Mounts One Man Show

Talented young Wiltshire artist Alexander Kai is staging his first solo exhibition in the dramatic setting of St. Mary's Devizes, with its wonderful light and fascinating history.

The show is an exciting opportunity for the 21-year-old, who lives in the village of All Cannings, to showcase the breadth of his creative portfolio.

Alexander’s work focuses primarily on the human form and the show will including paintings, drawings and sculptures capturing the unique characteristics and personalities of his wide-ranging sitters, which will be available to buy.

“I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and techniques in order to reflect the energy and soul of my subjects.”

Largely self-taught, he showed an interest in the arts and culture from early childhood, which led to his determination to carve out a career as an artist.

“The light and space in St Mary’s Church provides a perfect venue for displaying artwork.  I love talking about art and am looking forward to sharing my passion with those visiting the exhibition.”

In October 2022 he began a year’s training with Nicholas Beer at Sarum Studio, an atelier in Salisbury, to gain insight into traditional methods of oil painting and portraiture – and at the end of 2023 is off to Florence to further his studies.

Open Morning ♦ Weds 3rd August

NewFrontPewsDocQual

Wednesday 3rd August 10am-1pm

St Mary’s is opening its historic doors to the public for an Open Morning. The Church was originally built in the Norman era and over the many years, it has woven itself into the history of Devizes. Now St Mary’s looks to the future and hopes to become an art, education, and community centre.

As someone who has not only grown up in Devizes but also studied the arts, a place for other creative members of Devizes to thrive is crucial for future generations. We want to keep its deep history well rooted in its future project but allow it to grow and expand for future generations.

With this open day, you can show your support and learn more about our passionate project. Why not visit our exceptional building, find out about our exciting future project, and help your community?

Hope to see you there.

Meredith

About Bowes WineBowes Logo 800x800

Bowes Wine has been run by Caspar and Victoria Bowes since 2002. Their core business is managing – and growing – collections of fine wine for a private client-base.

Much of the wine they sell is for future drinking, but investment is also a consideration for some clients. At the same time, Bowes Wine has been on a mission to encourage its clients to enjoy a more eclectic vinous lifestyle through a range of everyday drinking wines which offer something a little bit different, be it an unusual grape variety or less familiar region of origin.

There are more countries exploiting more grape varieties than ever before, producing an increasingly delightful range of styles. Caspar and Victoria believe we owe it to ourselves to explore this colourful melting pot.

A Play by Riding Lights Theatre Company

This professional theatre company is coming to St. Mary later this month as it performs a play that shines a light on the realities facing children in the care system in Britain today.

My Place is a powerful and moving evening of theatre and conversation, telling the interwoven stories of children – an individual, a sibling group and a refugee – as they journey through the care system.

What's the story of My Place?

Both entertaining and thought-provoking, My Place follows the stories of four children in care, an individual child, a pair of siblings and an unaccompanied child refugee. They have different backgrounds and journeys, brought to life through a range of colourful story-telling techniques, including song and spoken word. Each story highlights the need for all vulnerable children to have a safe, stable and loving home where they can thrive.

Who is the event for?

Everyone! Any individual who cares about children, has a passion for justice and compassion for our society’s most vulnerable would be inspired by this event. We hope that many people will gain a better understanding of the experience of young refugees and children in care. The play is suitable for teenagers and adults but not recommended for younger children.

As part of its eight week nationwide tour and the evening will combine a performance of My Place with an opportunity to hear about the national fostering and adoption charity Home for Good and how each of us can play our part in transforming the lives of vulnerable children and young people.

Home for Good is a charity that exists to find a home for every child who needs one. We hope to inspire and equip people to open their homes to children and teenagers through fostering, adoption and supported lodgings. We resource churches to be a welcoming and supportive community for families who care for vulnerable children and advocate on their behalf at all levels of government.
